Ability To Work: Possession of a valid CA license as a Registered Nurse and a valid CA certificate as a Public Health Nurse issued by the California State Board of Registered Nursing, and:
1. Four years of progressively responsible experience in public health nursing, including two years of administrative or supervisory experience; or
2. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
A master's degree in nursing, public health, or a related health care field may be substituted for one year of non-administrative or non-supervisory experience.
Additional Qualifications: Candidate's qualifications must meet CA requirements for serving as Director of Public Health Nursing as contained in Title 17 of the CA Health and Safety Code, Section 1301; may require possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.
Knowledge of: public health issues such as communicable diseases, prenatal care, family violence, and accident prevention; general nursing skills and practices in the areas of maternal, child, and adult health; community needs assessment; health care needs of a diverse population from a variety of social, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds; available community resources; federal, state, and local legislation and regulations related to nursing programs; project management; performance measurement; strategic planning methods and tools; principals and practices of supervision; grant writing and application process; standard English grammar; standard office software.
Job Description: This is a single position management classification in the Public Health Department. The Director of Nursing is distinguished from the Medical Services Manager and the Community Health Manager by its responsibility for developing and implementing department-wide policy regarding nursing utilization, activities, and training and by the managers' responsibility for managing the programs in the Public Health and Community Health Divisions.
