Fire Battalion Chief Staff Job Description

Ability To Work: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is required; and:

1. Three years of broad and progressively responsible experience performing duties equivalent to those of Fire Captain with Santa Barbara County, including experience in supervision of fire suppression and fire code enforcement activities; or,
2. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Applicants hired after December 26, 1988, shall be disqualified from further employment consideration if they use tobacco products in any form, on or off duty.

Knowledge of: firefighting problems, techniques, and equipment; national and state fire codes and administrative regulations; fire-related provisions of the Uniform Building Code; standards of the National Fire Protection Association; fire chemistry; current techniques of building inspection and arson investigation; Incident Command System, emergency medical management; hazardous materials response and management; disaster planning, response, and recovery; principles and practices of public administration as applied to the management of fire and other emergency services; principles and practices of public budgeting, financial management, personnel management, and records management.


Job Description: Positions in this class have responsibility for a group of fire stations or for a major program such as code enforcement, emergency services and hazardous materials, or training; and manage extended attack and major emergency responses. The class of Battalion Chief is distinguished from Fire Captain by ongoing responsibility for a group of engine companies and by county-wide responsibility for fire and emergency operations on an assigned shift.

Definition: Under general direction, manages the activities a group of fire stations, an administrative services section, an emergency services and hazardous materials section, or an enforcement section; plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the activities of staff, and may command fire and other emergency operations; and performs related duties as required.
