Fire Deputy Chief Job Description

Ability To Work:

1. Three years of experience as a Fire Battalion Chief or equivalent management-level experience that included significant County/District-wide fire operational, administrative, and logistical responsibilities; or,
2. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver License.

Knowledge of: firefighting problems, techniques, and equipment; national and state fire codes and administrative regulations; fire-related provisions of the Uniform Building Code; standards of the National Fire Protection Association; fire chemistry; current techniques of building inspection and arson investigation; Incident Command System; emergency medical management; hazardous material response and management; disaster planning, response, and recovery; principles and practices of public administration as applied to the management of fire and other emergency services; principles and practices of public and program performance budgeting, financial management, personnel management, labor relations, and mutual aid; California Department of Forestry contracts and regional responsibilities.


Job Description: This Class is distinguished from the Fire Chief by its emphasis on providing hands-on departmental direction, whereas the Fire Chief provides strategic, long-term planning extending beyond the scope of departmental administration.

Definition: Under administrative direction, assists in the planning, organization, direction, and administration of the activities of the Fire Department, including Operations, Administration, Protection Services, Finance, Personnel, and Office of Emergency Services; acts for the Fire Chief in his/her absence; and performs related duties as required.
