Fire Engineer Inspector Staff Job Description

Ability To Work:

1. Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent, and two years of full time experience as a firefighter; or,
2. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Additional Qualification: Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class B-Restricted Firefighter Driver's License.

Applicants hired after December 26, 1988 shall be disqualified from further employment consideration if they use tobacco products in any form, on or off duty.

Knowledge of: fire prevention and fire suppression methods; county and state laws and regulations; safety principles pertaining to fire protection; fire hazards common to commercial, industrial and residential structures; operation and maintenance of pumping and all other types of firefighting and rescue equipment; local geography, roads and water supply systems; Fire Department Policies and Procedures Manual; incident command system; California Vehicle Code; Santa Barbara County Code; principles of affirmative action and equal employment opportunity.


Job Description: This class reports to the Fire Captain, and is responsible for the operation of fire apparatus and pumping equipment and for independent field fire inspections. May be called upon to assume an acting Fire Captain position over a crew of firefighters.

$30.48-$37.21 every hour / $5,301-$6,472 monthly / Range: 6184

Fire Engineer Inspector, Shift (#3546)

$21.77-$26.58 every hour / $5,301-$6,472 monthly / Range: 6184

Definition: Under general supervision, drives all types of fire apparatus in responding to emergency incidents; operates and maintains pumping equipment and the complement of tools contained on apparatus; assumes occasional responsibility for the supervision of a fire station in the absence of the Fire Captain; performs inspection activities in commercial structures and businesses and performs other activities designed to prevent fires; and performs related duties as required.
