1. Completion of 60 semester or 90 quarter units of college coursework, preferably with a major in behavioral sciences, social sciences, criminology, or a related field; or,
2. a combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to that listed above that would provide the required knowledge and abilities (an example of equivalent experience would be working with juvenile offenders, as a counselor in a group home).
Must meet minimum peace officer standards as specified in Government Code Sections 1029 and 1031 including, but not limited to, the following:
* no prior felony convictions (unless fully pardoned);
* good moral character as determined through a background check (this includes a polygraph examination);
* no physical, mental, or emotional condition which might adversely affect the powers of a peace officer;
* not currently on probation for a misdemeanor.
Within the one-year probationary period, must complete core training required by Standards in Training for Corrections (STC) which includes, but is not limited to, law enforcement procedures, 832 PC (laws of arrest), and passing a physical agility examination.
Additional Requirements:
# Appointees must be at least 21 years of age.
# Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.
# All appointees must participate in 40 hours of intense, on-the-job training, which focuses on psychological principles and techniques applicable to the care and rehabilitation of juvenile offenders, and the growth, development, needs, and problems of minors. This training must be successfully completed during the first week of employment.
# Some positions in this classification may require possession of a valid California Class B Driver's License.
# Appointees to those positions requiring a Class B license will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs prior to beginning work; once on the job, incumbents will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis.
# Appointee must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.
Knowledge of: standard English grammar, spelling, punctuation, report writing, and usage; basic arithmetic; standard computer applications used in an office; adolescent psychology, juvenile justice, juvenile delinquency, counseling, basic knowledge of the criminal justice system.
