Maintenance Superintendent Public Works Job Description

Ability To Work:

1. Three years of experience supervising public works maintenance and construction supplemented by training in budget development and personnel administration; or,
2. one year of experience as a Maintenance Supervisor with Santa Barbara County supplemented by training in budget development and personnel administration; or,
3. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Knowledge of: methods, materials, and equipment used in road or flood control maintenance and improvement; administrative principles and methods as applied to public works field operations; County, state, and federal regulations concerning flood control or roads maintenance; project management; performance measurement; principles and practices of effective supervision and personnel management; and standard English grammar and usage.


Job Description: This class is responsible for managing the field maintenance programs in the Flood Control Division or a region of the Roads Division of the Public Works Department. Incumbents are responsible for managing staff and equipment to ensure efficient use of resources.

This class is distinguished from the Roads Maintenance Manager, which is a single-position class responsible for managing the entire Roads Division, consisting of regional offices (road maintenance yards) throughout the county. The Maintenance Superintendents in the Roads Division report to the Road Maintenance Manager.

Maintenance Superintendent, PW is further distinguished from the Flood Control Operations Manager, which is a single position class with overall responsibility for managing the operations of the Flood Control Division. The Operations Manager has significant responsibility in the preparation of environmental impact documents and coordinating the division's efforts to implement programs while also addressing various environmental concerns in the county. The Maintenance Superintendent in the Flood Control Division reports to the Flood Control Operations Manager.
