Park Operations Manager Job Description

Ability To Work:

1. Five years of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Park Ranger III with Santa Barbara County that included training in budget development and personnel administration ; or,
2. a bachelors degree in business, public, or personnel administration; parks and recreation; natural resource management; or related field and one year experience performing duties equivalent to Park Ranger III with Santa Barbara County; or,
3. a bachelors degree in business, public, or personnel administration; parks and recreation; natural resource management; or related field and three years of experience in park operations that included 1 year of supervisory experience; or,
4. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is required.

Knowledge of: principles and practices of park operations management; County, state and federal regulations concerning park operations; laws, ordinances and principles of park safety and enforcement activity; fiscal management and budget administration; project management, including the preparation of estimates and bid specifications; performance measurement; current management theory and practices; principles and practices of effective supervision and personnel management; and standard English grammar and usage.


Job Description: The Park Operations Manager (POM) has responsibility for managing operations and implementing policies through development of operational procedures, and managing personnel and budget matters of a regional park area that may include sub-regional areas. The POM is distinguished from Park Ranger III in that the latter is a supervisory class that reports to the POM and is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of a sub-regional area that may include parks, open spaces, trails and County building landscape maintenance. The POM is distinguished from the Deputy Park Director in that the latter is an at-will executive class that provides policy direction to Park Operations Managers, assists the Director in the administration of the operations of the department, and acts for the Director during his or her absence.
