Grading Inspector Job Description

Ability To Work:

1. One year of experience in grading and/or excavation that would provide knowledge of the basic principles of soil mechanics and geology as applied to grading; or,
2. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is required.

Knowledge of: basic grading and drainage methods and equipment; basic principles of soil mechanics and geology as applied to grading; standard English usage and grammar; standard record-keeping methods and practices; accepted customer service practices; arithmetic.


Job Description: Grading Inspector I is the entry level class in which incumbents receive training and close supervision and are expected to obtain sufficient knowledge and skills to progress to the journey level within a reasonable period of time.

The Grading Inspector series is distinguished from the Building Engineering Inspector series in that the Grading Inspectors enforce grading codes and ordinances and do not have any specific certification requirements. Building Engineering Inspectors enforce building codes and regulations and must, within a year at the journey level, obtain a certification in one of the specialty areas of building inspection such as mechanical, electrical, or plumbing.


About Salary: $21.01-$25.65 every hour / $3,654-$4,461 monthly / Range: 5438

Definition: Under immediate supervision, learns and assists in grading inspection, reviewing grading and drainage plans, and processing permits; and performs related duties as required.
