1. One year of Class A driving experience operating diesel tractor-trailer combinations of four or more axles; or,
2. experience as a Maintenance Worker II or Refuse Checker with Santa Barbara County, including 2000 hours of Class A driving experience operating diesel tractor-trailer combinations of four or more axles; or,a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Possession of a valid California Class A Driver's License is required. Appointees to this classification will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs prior to beginning work; once on the job, incumbents will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis.
Knowledge of: mechanical operations and maintenance of diesel tractor-trailer combinations and heavy equipment; safe work practices; California Dept. of Motor Vehicles guidelines for truck inspections and regulations related to operating semi-tractor trailers with multiple axles; and basic math.
Job Description: Heavy Truck Driver is distinguished from the classes of Heavy Equipment Operator, Maintenance Worker II, and Refuse Checker by its primary assignment to the operation of diesel tractor-trailer combinations of four or more axles. Positions in the Heavy Equipment Operator class operate heavy construction equipment including, but not limited to, motor graders, bulldozers, excavators, scrapers, cranes, steel rollers, and chip spreaders. Incumbents in the Maintenance Worker II and Refuse Checker classifications may operate diesel tractor-trailer combinations on an occasional or fill-in basis if they possess the required Class A license.
About Salary: $19.02-$23.21 every hour / $3,307-$4,037 monthly / Range: 5238
Definition: Under general direction, drives diesel
tractor-trailer combinations of four or more axles in transporting
refuse and recyclable material; performs skilled work in the
operation of loaders and other power equipment at refuse transfer
stations and landfills; and performs related duties as required.
