Probation Institutions Supervisor Job Description

Ability To Work:

1. One year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of either Deputy Probation Officer, Senior or Juvenile Institutions Officer, Supervising with Santa Barbara County; or,
2. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License and U.S. Citizenship or permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Must meet minimum peace officer standards as specified in California Government Code Sections 1029 and 1031 including but not limited to: no prior felony convictions (unless fully pardoned), good moral character as determined by thorough background check, submission of fingerprints for purpose of a criminal record check, and be found to be free from any physical, emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect the powers of a peace officer.

Knowledge of: the principles of general administration and supervision; general operations of detention facilities and scope of work for subordinates; procedures of the courts, ideally juvenile courts, and the provision of probation services to adults or juveniles in the criminal justice system; psychological principles and techniques applicable to the care and rehabilitation of juvenile offenders; the growth, development, needs, and problems of juveniles.


Job Description: This class is distinguished from Supervising Juvenile Institutions Officer by its ongoing responsibility for supervising operations of a probation institution, whereas the Supervising Juvenile Institutions Officer serves as shift supervisor with primary responsibility for assigning and reviewing work and training staff in a work unit. This class is further distinguished from Probation Manager by the Manager's greater authority and responsibility for overall administrative, fiscal, and program oversight and for all facets of facility operations, policies, and procedures.


About Salary: $27.45-$33.51 every hour / $4,774-$5,828 monthly / Range: 5974

Definition: Under general direction of a Probation Manager, supervises administrative and program activities of the Los Prietos Boys Camp, the Los Prietos Boys Academy, Santa Maria Juvenile Hall, or Santa Barbara Juvenile Hall; supervises the quality of care in the institution; interprets policies and procedures; supervises subordinate staff and detainees; and performs related work as required.
